Got in trouble for Copyright Infringement

Post by assaultM » 2004-09-06 21:57

I received a letter from my ISP about 'Copyright Infringement.' The letter said 'Please accept this letter as notification that your Cable Internet Account has been permanently terminated for abuse. Our systems administrator received notifications for abuse (Copyright Infringement) traced by IP address to your cable modem acount on two separate occasions. These notifications were received from Entertainment Software Association, as well as BayTSP, Inc.' ESA found 4 games and BayTSP found 2 movies on my computer. Now everybody that I told this to told me it was because I was sharing them... I was sharing more than the ones I got in trouble for. If it was because of these spies looking at my filelist then why didn't I get in trouble for having those other files? I'm confused and really don't know how I got caught.
BTW, it was DC++ because they also listed the infringement details.

I would say it's because they didn't need to. The five cases they identified were enough to justify terminating your contract.

I'm confused and really don't know how I got caught.

Truthfully, the ISP probably probably doesn't care, but there are several companies who are paid by software and media companies to fight against the illegal distrobution of their material. It's likely one of those copanies who did the actual spying (not to complicated really, they look for stuff do download just like everybody else).

Is there anyway they can find out by me downloading the files? Was it that or was it because I was uploading/sharing them?

It was because you were uploading/sharing them.

What was your ISP?

I received an email from BAYTSP as well indicating DCMA violations. I was given 24 hours to remove the 'offending' material. If I did not comply, I would find myself berefft of Cox's services.

I just do not share movies anymore--case closed. I still share other sundry items however.

We will not help anyone who commits any sort of copyright infringement.
