I can download wmp and mpeg files, but every time i download an avi file, windows media player tells me that there was an error downloading the codec. whats the problem?

ffdshow
GSpot to determine the codec needed
google to find the proper codec (if ffdshow doesn't include it, unlikely. But XViD might be required, too, google for xvid binary)
Media Player Classic (to replace WMP, for the most part)
