Errors on bigger files.

Post by Svin » 2006-03-30 23:51

I don't seem to be able to get big files without errors. Smaller files, like some mb usually comes fine, but if they're 40-50 mb or larger I just can't get them without errors. TTH root and CRC does not match the original. What should I do to fix this?

What DC++ version are you using, and are you using a firewall?

I'm using 0.688. But I don't think this is a dc++ problem really since I tried StrongDC hoping that would solve the problem, but it didn't. I'd be glad if you could try help me out here anyway. I have no clue where to look.

I'm currently trying (with dc++ 0.688) to download a file that is split into several 47mb rar archives, with an sfv file. So far just one match the crc in the sfv file. And I've downloaded about 10 or so.

I've checked the disk I'm downloading to and it seems fine, I don't know what else I can do.

I just tried to copy one file I am sharing and refresh my file list and checked their TTH root. They don't match! So is it the disk, or can it be something else? I need help here. I must be able to copy a file and get a copy of it...

I will check the disk again. That will take a while. Is there any tool for checking your computer, that might help me solve this?

Try to copy some larger files from one folder to other in your hdd and then check the integrity by tth (or copy zip files and try to extract them after). If its ok then the problem is not in your disk / hdd controller.

Try to dl big (archive or install) files by other protocol such as http or ftp Check the integrity too.

I think I need an explanation to what TTH root actually is... I checked my disk, and it did find some "lost files", but seemed ok otherwise. Then I once again tried to copy a file, 740 mb, and TTH root did not match now either. Then I made a copy of the copy, and the TTH for the copy of the copy matched the original! Wtf?!? So I used a program called Express checksum calculator, and all three had the same checksum (CRC32, MD5, SHA-1). Still the first copy does not have the same TTH root. It's the same in StrongDC. And even if that's just a bug in the TTH root, it shouldn't complain that the CRC differs in the rar archive, right? I'm feeling rather confused now...

In simple words : TTH its a hashing algorythm just like MD5 or the others you mentioned. TTH Root is the hash key (same as MD5 key in MD5)

For more info go to : http://ullner.blogspot.com/2006/03/tige ... html#links TTH is briefly covered there.

So I used a program called Express checksum calculator, and all three had the same checksum (CRC32, MD5, SHA-1).

Then you dont have small chance of disk problems and the files are surely identical.

And even if that's just a bug in the TTH root, it shouldn't complain that the CRC differs in the rar archive, right?

Right. But it doesnt help you.... Sounds stupid but try to place all copies to the same folder with different name (tth root doesnt depend on filename). Lets see what happens...

Yes, the files are obviously identical. Still the TTH root is not. And they were in the same directory called "X", "copy of X" and "copy of copy of X".

I should also mention that I've used that express program before on another file I downloaded like 5-6 times and got different CRC every time.

Try to get some big files with you web browser 2-3 times and check them. We'll se if you face some network problem...

I'm starting to think this actually is a dc++ problem after all. I downloaded again the file I've already downloaded 6 times (because I want it!), and the TTH root was wrong this time too. I made two copies of it, different TTH roots, different crc. I then closed dc++ and made two more copies. Same crc and same TTH root when I started dc++ again. Then made two more copies being sure the only thing that was different was the fact that I had dc++ running, and again I get different CRC and TTH root. I will try to download some files with StrongDC while NOT running dc++ and see what happens. If I still get errors I will find some file I can download quickly enough via http.

Alright. After spending a day with this I've realized it's my drive that's not working as it should. It wasn't that dc++ was running that was the problem, the problem was ANYTHING writing to the disk fucked up the files. Not even copying a few files simultaneously worked. I don't seem to have this problem on my other drive, so I'll download to that one from now. Does anyone have any suggestion to what I could do though, apart from buying a new drive?

Get the manfacturer's diagnostic tools and check it out. If it's in warranty then RMA it. Otherwise, new drive time.

Ofcourse backup your valuable data soon :)

You can get info about your drive's health (without loss of data) by reading the drive's SMART info. Many tools can do this, I use SpeedFan http://www.almico.com for it. The newest SpeedFan has a web based 'human readable' analyzer so it can tell you if the drive itself reporting some problems.
