Search Window Annoyance

Post by lordadmira » 2006-04-22 19:40

I noticed that new search windows retain the type setting from old search windows. According to the change log this is a new "feature". I must say that this is incredibly annoying. I've burned many wasted searches because I didn't notice that the type was no longer "any" even though I was in a new window.

Basically can this feature be removed in the next version? If not can we have an option to disable it. I want all my new search windows to default to the vanilla setting.

To keep those who want this "feature" happy we can put a clone button in the search window. That would open up a new search window with all the same parameters and settings as the current window. There is room for this right next to the Search button. Ctrl-S and the toolbar would open up new clean windows.

hehe, my bad. kind of. I submitted a patch to arne to save the last search settings of TTH only, and Free slots, and he suggested also having last type used. I didn't think of adding an option to disable it. But since you would like an option to disable, how ? all saved setings, the 3 possibles individually, or just stop the saving the last search type as default ?

I think the option should be to enable saving of the options. The default should be nothing is saved.

Seems like we're going backwards... The reason for the patch was to avoid a bunch of settings... Just keep a 'Any' search window open the entire time and close it last.

Yep.
Just keep a 'Any' search window open the entire time and close it last.

Now that is ridiculous.

The save search windows settings is only of use to people who do a LOT of searches on the SAME type criteria. For everybody else who does lots of searches with random criteria or occasionaly takes the search window off the defaults this increases our work. It would be much better and overall more efficient if there was a clone button for people who want this, like I said before. With a clone button, there doesn't need to be a new config option. The clone button is the way to go, it makes everybody happy and solves all these problems.

yes this is very annoying indeed..
i make some search using for example video file type -> afterwards i close that search window -> then i open new search window and it still has file type set to 'video' (and any other specific settings i have made in that earlier search window).

This is one of those things that make me wonder if the developers really use their software at all..

User opinion:

I search only for video files these days. I always set the minimal file size to 300MB (because most of the stuff I want is slightly higher than 300MB if it has quality). I also set Video files, because it filters out alot of crap I don't need.

I don't do massive TTH searches, nobody does or can. Search intervals are too strict for that. I have no problem setting 300MB/Video everytime I run a search, and I would prefer the "default" all files setting rather than the saved "300MB/Video" setting.

But that's my opinion.
I want your slot.

Of course we don't use DC++. We have a better software.

In my opinion lordadmira's suggestion was quite good. Just add a clone-button that clones current search window for those who want that.. and otherwise set all new search windows to default settings.

OR keep everything like it is now, but add new button for 'default search window'.

Normally I do 90% of searches without any special search settings (I know what I'm searcing for and type in those keywords). Sometimes there's need to search only for example mp3 or video files.. and afterwards it's really annoying when all new search windows have those specific settings.
