new bug system

Post by arnetheduck » 2004-06-10 14:40

Ok, for those of you that work with bugs & features:

It's time to move on to bugzilla, so the nice web people have set up a bugzilla at http://dcplusplus.sf.net/bugs. After the next release, _all_ bugs and feature requests will be reported there. Further, there will be a separate page to upload exceptioninfo.txt, so no exceptioninfo's in the bugzilla.

Further, there's a mailing list at dcplusplus-bugs@lists.sourceforge.net, please subscribe to it (https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/lis ... splus-bugs) so that you'll receive notice of bug postings, this way I can spend my time coding while you efficiently can handle dupes etc...

Oh, and I created this forum for us moderators so our posts don't get lost in the dump...

Questions and suggestions?

...also, post something here so that I know you're alive, otherwise I'll remove you from the moderators list...and if you see someone suitable for moderation or bug editing, post something in here as well...
The more of you there are, the less work you'll have...=)

This is an excellent development. Properly run, I think bugzilla is a nice todo list for features and fixes. It's also a good indicator (potentially) of how users would like to use DC++.

Maybe we can use this forum as a where-dc++-is-going list too. I know a lot of things need to be played by ear (such as ADC acceptance, hashing acceptance, popularity of multi-source downloading), but I (at least) could benefit from some direction that DC++ is going in, so I'm not just aimlessly fixing whatever I feel like at the moment - or responding to squeaky wheels on the forum/tracker.

Switching to bugzilla might even give some order to the bug reporting :D

I'm alive. Image

I've only ever briefly seen bugzilla at work and never had to actually use it, but from what I hear from GMT, a move in that direction is most definitely "a good thing". Image

The split of the moderators section is something that I've been thinking about for a while and I'm glad to see it got implemented. :)

Will the "Dump" be pruned at all?

EDIT: Will the current SF bug/feature tracker items be migrated to bugzilla or will it be started from scratch?

From scratch.

<GargoyleMT@work> what're the plans for the new style exception info + auto-bug reporting?
<arnetheduck> they're en route, I won't release 0.402 until the page is in place...
<arnetheduck> the plan is no crashes in bugzilla (nuke all), no bug reports in the old tracker (keep it open a while longer), only care about 0.402+ bugs, keep feature reqs in bugzilla, tell people to send patches to bugzilla
<arnetheduck> for the autocrash, there'll be a page where the user can upload a crash report manually (perhaps the only way in 402 if I don't have time to write the upload code)

I think sharing that is fine.

Excellent. There's a lot of debris floating around there.

Another question: Will the bugzilla logins be separate from the forums logins? It would be useful to consolidate them seeing as they're part of one site, but I can see how that might be problematic.

I hadn't broached the subject. Having two logins/registrations is a bit of a barrier, perhaps enough so that only the truly motivated will look (and maybe these are the same people who look for duplicates before they post).

(I think I'm hallucinating.)

Hmm. Not quite. The current mechanism has two logins yet that hasn't stopped the vast number of duplicates and invalid items.

I do see your point though about barriers.

I'm alive too! =) If i'm needed i'll try to help out with the new bugtracker. I've been checking bugzilla out a bit for a project of mine, would be interesting to see what it's capable of.

not for the list...you've got edit bugs permissions now anyway...

the general idea is that each bug / feature req will stay in unconfirmed until 5 users vote for it, so that we don't get overwhelmed as in the old trackers...it's also a good medicine against dupes...

Have now registered for the bug tracker and the list, though I did the list twice because I think I screwed it up first time.

I've been playing around with bugzilla today (after pulling my hair out trying to get the damn thing to install) and would like to propose a change to the way the products and components have been allocated in the DC++ bugzilla.

At the moment it consists of one product (DC++) with one version (0.402) and two components ("Source code" and "Web site & forum"). One item from each list must be chosen to enter a new bug. With the current setup, if I wanted to report a forum bug for example, I would use product DC++ (having no other choice) and component "Website & forum". This is OK, but then choosing version 0.402, or indeed any version number, makes no sense.

To resolve this, I propose promoting "Web site & forum" from the component level to the product level.

In addition, I think the current Category list in the Sourceforge tracker is useful and so it would be a good idea to migrate this list to bugzilla.

Overall, this is what I had in mind:

Product: DC++.
Components: User Interface, Searching, Sharing ... and so on.
Version: 0.402, 0.4xx ... and so on.

Product: Website.
Components: Website, Forums, FAQ ... and so on.
Version: None.

And making a logical leap ...
Product: DCH++
Components: ???
Version: ???

Does that make sense?

Category updating

Post by GargoyleMT » 2004-06-22 00:08

Check out the categories now. I duplicated all of the ones I thought were important, and split a couple others up. You handle a lot of bugs - are there any that should be included that aren't - or places I split apart combinations in ways that doesn't make sense?

(I only touched the DC++ categories)

Well, you're welcome to create a bugzilla account and sign up for the list. Drop a note here, and all will be taken care of.

Even if you don't have time to contribute, you can get bugspam.

I'll be happy to contribute to the best of my abilities. I haven't been here for a while due to excessive amounts of work but I think I'll find some time to cheer you boyz up with some "Hall of fame" stuff :)

I've just realised that I haven't received any Bugzilla notifications since 20th Dec. That was for bug #389 and the current one is #408.

Has everyone else been receiving emails? Is this problem restricted to just me?

On a related note, I did in fact receive one email on the 28th, but it was for a change made by GMT on 27th September. Weird.

I'm trying to figure out why... Sourceforge's mail system is complicated, I'm not sure if it's just delay, or outright failure.

I forced the email on the 28th, and I ran it from my shell account. That might be why it delivered.

I seem to have the same problem. I haven't had any mails from bugzilla since 19th dec. The exception being Bug 127 with Garg's additional comment from 27th sept (!?). So.......

I _think_ the mailing list is just fucked. There's nothing on sourceforge's outage page: http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_d ... docid=2352

If you add the mailing list to your watch list in bugzilla, you'll probably get your mails correctly.

I browsed the open-issues list: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=br ... tid=200001

I haven't seen anything there that looks like our issue.

I did change the sender on the bugzilla mails to: "bugzilla-daemon <gargoylemt@yahoo.com>" in case of replies, but also in case their mail software (Exim) was verifying senders.

Meh.

Actually, I think it's the bugzilla...the mailing list archive is empty as well...I also tried sending a message to the list and it was received correctly (you won't get it, i posted from a non-member address)...or it could be the shell mailing service that sf's turned off...the number of forum members that went without mail has grown as well...

Sourceforge is a big black box when it comes to solving issues like this.

If we wanted to host bugzilla elsewhere (is Bobby from Zpoc still paying for dcplusplus.com?), DC++ is worth a minimum of $30/month to me. I haven't looked seriously for suitable hosts.

well, ask bobby, I have no idea...I wonder if he'll let go very easily though, I try to discourage people from using it in any case...I won't trust it until someone reasonable takes it over, so sure, garg if you get ahold of it, want to pay for reg and all, and then find suitable hosting...
find out costs etc, we could do a paypal fundraising drive probably...possibly outside the us, i don't like the software climate there...
