Supporting non-DC++ clients?

Post by TheParanoidOne » 2004-07-25 14:15

There seem to be more and more people who are coming and asking for help with clients that are not DC++ (or maybe I'm just noticing this more). I'm not sure what the "official" take on this should be. Personally I'd prefer to say "We can't help you with anything other than DC++" and leave it at that.

This also applies to Programmers Help, with people compiling non-DC++ source. There is a guy there who is asking general modification questions but it is clear that he is using CZDC++ source. Should he be told the "We only support DC++" line too?

Thoughts?

Note: I know that BCDC++ is a special case and should probably be exempt from some of the above.

Well, I've been in the habit of moving all non-dc++ posts to Other tools, and making a point of asking people whether they're using a dc++ derivative or not.

As far as programmer's help... if it's anything like the "what STLPort do I use?" from the development hub, definitely tell them to seek help elsewhere. Otherwise... I'd like to encourage people to contribute to DC++ instead of making more forks.

Use the "We only support DC++" line when you think you need to, if you didn't have a good head on your shoulders, you wouldn't have been given moderator status.

well, imho, let the mod authors take care of the mod users problems...or at least that's (partially) what the new bug reporting system is about, with the tth of the executable to get rid of false reports...

TPO: sure, tell them that this is the DC++ forum.
as long as you don't lock the thread, no one is hurt. mod authors can still reply to questions, and at the same time, we aren't inviting everone (discouraging most) to use this board (b/w issues, etc..).

A perfectly acceptable way to go in my opinion. I'm aware of the fact how much the mod-makers contribute. I know they've helped me with programming questions more than once. But to make them fix they're own bugs is not too much to ask for.

Regards
