If someone posts something and talks about copyright infringement, even something like "downloading 4 movies", please move it to the Dump and PM them my brand new post about copyright infringement in Help/Support.

Any evidence that you have knowingly assisted an end-user in committing copyright infringement will be used against you. In the P2P cases so far, one source for this kind of evidence is from customer support channels, whether message board traffic, instant messages or email. A user writes in, explaining that the software acted strangely when he tried to download The Matrix. If you answer him, copyright owners will make it seem that you directly assisted the user in infringement, potentially complicating your contributory infringement defense.

So let the user community support themselves in whatever forums they like. (This will be easier if you are open source, of course.) Your staff can monitor forums and create FAQs that assist users with common problems, but avoid engaging in one-on-one customer support.

Now that's somthing I'm glad I read sooner, rather than later.

That goes back to what I was saying to you earlier about using IM. It's a little too realtime and you may say something in passing that will sit in a log and come back to haunt you.

At least with forums/email you get a chance to compose your thought clearly.

Yeah, seeing how this is the official sanctioned support forum, we'd better take the zero-tolerance road on this one.

Oh and i totally agree with TPO, real-time conversations are dangerous.. especially in r/l.. then you can't go back and edit your inflamatory statements.. oh my how many times i've wished i could do that..
