DC++ upload limit idea

Post by Wisp » 2003-04-01 16:08

I know there have been a lot of topics regarding this subject but i just wanted to post this idea ;)

The argument to not implement an upload limit is the ability to abuse the feature, therefore i have figured out a way which can't be abused

the idea is you have 1 slider in your options panel, the slider will limit your upload speed but will also limit your download speed at the same time

so if you set the limit to 80% you will also have 80% of your download speed left, so only people who really need to limit their upload will use it otherwise your download will be reduced for no reason

I don't know if this feature is practically possible (i'm not a dc++ programmer) but I would really like it because i have a download speed of 180 kb/s but when someones download something from me, the speed drops to 1 a 5kb/s so at this time it's not possible for me to share

hope you like the idea, sorry if it was posted before ;)

Problem 1: DC++ doesn't know the upload/download limits of your connection. Detecting this is not so easy.

Problem 2: Certain ratios might be viewed as quite abusive still: like 1.5mbit/128kbit DSL. Twenty percent of that is 37.5kbyte/s down and 3.2kbyte/s up, which I don't think many people would view as "fair."

I agree that this is a potential solution, and the one that many softwares take, but it's not a particularly good solution.

An aside is that the official NMDC client v1.1 for OS X has upload limiting included, and limits the download speed to 8x the upload speed. That's not a particularly good solution either.

There are upload limited clients out there, I don't see how you can truthfully say "... so at this time it's not possible for me to share"

Well because i have only 16kb upload, and if people download with 16kb/s from me, i cant download anything, and my internet connection is slow as hell.. so that's why i rarely use dc++, but if i could limit the speed to about 10kb/s i would still be able to download files with acceptable speed

and i haven't seen any upload limited clients, i have only seeen a version of dc++ which cut off all the uploads, but that's lame

My 128kbit upload ADSL is the same. After 14kbyte/s of uploads, my download speed slows to about 128kbit as well. If you haven't found any upload limited clients, look harder. They've even been mentioned here in the past.

Well dc++ doesn't have to detect your download speed, it will only cap the speed of shich you are actually downloading. So if you are downloading a file with 100kb/s, and you set your limit to 80% the download will be reduced to 80kb/s
Problem 2: Certain ratios might be viewed as quite abusive still: like 1.5mbit/128kbit DSL. Twenty percent of that is 37.5kbyte/s down and 3.2kbyte/s up, which I don't think many people would view as "fair." [/q]

Do you mean that the download is reduced to much compared to the reduced upload?

[offtopic] isn't it possible to edit your posts on this forum?

Hmm, well how do you measure the speed of the download to figure out what to throttle it to? This doesn't scale well to multiple downloads, and doesn't scale at all to multiple uploads. The only sane way is operating on the connection speed, which isn't available to DC++.

And no, I mean that uploading at 3kbyte/s and being able to download at 38kbyte/s is an unfair ratio.

Fixed Ratio

Post by DrB » 2003-04-01 18:58

i and lot of people are against upload limits but whith a fixed ratio ( like Edonkey 1/3 or less for discourage the use) and a proper TAG maybe the user sick about their 512/128 concetion won't take a hacked DC++

sorry for my english :(

I NEED an upload limiter

Post by JunonWasteland » 2003-04-05 14:12

Basically i sit on the uni network

max upload 1 Megabit (as far as ive seen)
max download 8 Megabits (its freakily fast)

the problem weve been told if were seen using more than 300k/s continuosly we will get kicked (and in far too much trouble)

people end up leeching of me at the full 1Mb

hence i have to kick them which i feel is unfair as i would happily let them download at 10-50k/s which im sure they wud be happy with

THE SOLUTION

i use DCGUI now it has an upload limiter but i dont abuse it BUT its getting banned from hubs so its back to DC++ under wine with the painfull text problems and the kicking people as soon as they make a connection above 100

and anyway i cant find anyone who i can download from at more than 100k/s anyway

i think a 'sensible' cap would be useful such as limit upload and download speed to the same value such as 300 / 300 k/s as then people wouldnt use it unless they had to, ratios i feel would get abused

The upload code I contributed to BCDC and (back to) DC++k will cap at megabyte limits. Get one of them and use it. Don't kick people.

in some way its good...i have sucki 128 uploiad connection and ...wen i wanna send something thru icq
dc eats all the bandwidth ...

but if ppl start to limit the upload speed every 1 will do that and the stream of sharing will over soon enough

He who wants to share, shares. He who doesn't want to share, won't share. No matter the features of the client.

I have to agree that upload control in some form is a good idea. I think a reasonable solution is trusting people not to lie about their connection and using OPs to punish blatant abusers. I know this isn't a perfect solution, but it would help people whose upload bandwidth is too crammed to allow significant DLs to get much greater useability. Of course, some form of effective automated control would be better, but would be much more difficult to accurately implement in my opinion. I also know a significant portion of users only get a limited amount of bandwidth per month and they end up uploading much more than they download because their ULs kill their DLs. I'm not one of these users, fortunately for me, but it's easy to understand how this issue is also a serious concern for them.
