Bandwidth management wizard

Post by MrCrowley » 2003-09-22 09:54

Instead of a wholey configurable speed limiter how about a bandwidth management wizard?

eg. you are able to run the wizard once... it tests your upload speed to a remote server and when the test is done it allows you to set your upload cap to within a variable of 5k/s of the maximum speed.

I realize there could be problems with this and it would not be impossible to cheat but more and more users are turning to modded clients anyway many of which also let the users cheat.
perhaps it would be usefull if those users had this option?

Maybe there would be less clients that can only upload at 50b/s as often happens now and if this worked well and users didn't find that there download speed payed a big deficit users might be a lot happier.

Anyway... just an idea.

there are problems with your idea, and they have all been pointed out before if you cared to read other forum posts.

If a person is downloading with another program during this test then their speed will be capped lower then it should be

if the server is getting overloaded or the user has a faster connection then the server the program will cap the speed lower then it should be

sometimes there are reasons to cap speeds, which I'm sure you agree with, most clients that have speed caps also enforce some kind of ratio or limit the download speed if the upload speed is limited too low. sometimes it can be handy to limit uploads and downloads to a low speed for a period of time when u need bw for something more important, this is better then closing the program in some cases as no slots are actually lost.

anyways there are lots of other points outlined in other posts on the forums about this topic, I suggest you go reading.

I did have a look thru some other of the MANY threads on the subject... tho i didn't see this specific idea, i will just take your word for that, i just didn't have the time to read every post. Anyway sorry for that.

both of these are not as bad as the upload speeds from bad clients where the user sets something rediculous like 50b/s.

Mainly my point is that if the official ++ client offered something many users might not look for these bad clients in the first place.

The easiest place to download the stealth mod is on DC hubs, i think users are more likely to discover that first than they are BCDC or DC++k.

Its spreading like a disease :(

With the above my assumption is that considering that most users probably start out with the regular dc++ client. (sorry no edit button)

there's nothing wrong with dc++k and BCDC, they are not a disease. if people limit too low then they are the problem not the mods. They can be used correctly and if they aren't then get the ops in the hub to deal with the person.
