Recognize files with same contents even if diff filenames

Post by JrpXMan » 2003-11-26 07:14

I know that if you start downloading a file from one person, and later remove them from the queue or they leave the hub, you can continue dling the file from someone else if it is the same exactly, but only if the file has the same exact filename as the partially finished dl. Perhaps a feature could be made to recognize a file that has the same contents as a previous dl even if it has a different filename. I know that this can be done manually by renaming some of the files in the unfinished download directory, but I guess it could be easier for some people if it was done automatically or if some prompt asked them if they would like to continue a previous download with the new source but differently named file. Just a thought...

find the file you want to use, and right click -> download to, the other file should be in the menu. The only exception I can think of is that the file extension must be the same (gets alittle annoying at times).

Beyond that, what you describe requires a system of hashing file contents, and using that hash as a key to identify uniqueness/compatibility. Do a search and read some of the threads. ;)
