in the good old BBS days , ansi was used alot.
ansi back then was basicaly ascii-in-color.
but there is a trick you can use to display ascii on an variable-width screen.
Find the similarly-spaced characters , and make your ascii out of those.
It might not work with every font , since different font might have different spacings.
for example

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
::::::::::::::::
dots and colons have the same width . (well . should have , probably...)
