you can start by using www.google.com and searching for "free cd ripper" or "cd to mp3 free" it doesn't take long

CDEx? I've heard of it, but I have no reason to use anything other than Exact Audio Copy.

It supports CDDB (is there a CD ripper that doesn't?) that is an easy automatic (assuming someone's entered the data for you) way of getting artist/song names.

If you don't want to be bogged down in these details, iTunes has a nice intuitive interface, and it does have a secure ripping mode. The encoder isn't LAME, so most people won't prefer it, but it'll get you by.

My main reason for pointing out CDex (other than having used it in the past) is that it is open source (GPL). Note the URL.

Not that the average person cares about such things.
