Whats legal?

Im new to dc++ one of my friends gave me the program and said that by sharing i can get some music i like or a movie etc. But I just want to know what can be shared legally. Because im sure a lot of companies hate this program cause they lose cash and well i dont want to download something and get a knock at the door with the police waving a warrant in my face. That wouldn't be nice now would it? Anyway i know theres the legal bit before installing DC++ I just wanted a shorter answer.
