TTH changes

Post by HPII2 » 2006-09-22 13:53

A guy started downloading a file on my hdd, but i deleted it accidentally :-(. So I copied it back onto my hdd from the cd but now the file has a different TTH so everytime he starts downloading it, it begins from 0 %. How can someone tell dc++ that it is the same file and that the program just has to resume the download? I also noticed that when I copy the file from one hdd to another or on the same hdd to a different location it's TTH changes everytime... or at least the program displays a different TTH when I go to file->open own list. Is everything fine with the program or my hdd because some people tell me something's wrong. :?:

If the file gets a different TTH each time, it's somehow getting changed or damaged. You should probably look into file integrity on your HD.

Yeah, not only this is happening, but when I use the PeerWebDC++ option file->get TTH for file I get a different value everytime (for the same file) and it's never the same value like the one I see when I open my own file list. I guess it goes too far. :?
But, ok, so changing TTHs are wrong... Is it possible that dc++ and not the hdd has a problem, I mean, how does the program determines if the file is the same... ok, that's an amateurish question, but...

If file size or filename has changed, it will rehash i think. :)

The TTH changed without it rehashing ?
Virus or corrupt harddisk then.

Either the TTH changed or the program shows a different TTH for some reason. Like I said in my last post, it depends where I look for it. Both, DC++ 0.674 and PWDC++ show the same TTH under my own file list, but PWDC++ shoes a different TTH everytime I do the 'get TTH for file' thing, an option in the menu which 0.674 doesn't have. For the same file without copying. If I do copy the file it gets a new TTH anyway.
I'll do the virus scan.

When you're copying it off a CD, it is most likely that the timecode of the file is changed resulting in a new hash.

In any case, you're using a version that is well over a year old. It's difficult for us to give any support on it. (Plus, we don't have any affiliation with 'PWDC++' and we don't know how its functions operate.)

That can't be right surely, if you backed up some group releases on a DVD disk, and their TTH had changed solely because their time stamps had changed...

Fine. The assertion may not be correct. But something obviously changed in the file.

However, this isn't a particular interesting problem (for us). There are plenty of new versions of DC++ out there. If you are using an old version, realize that you are bound to get in to trouble sometimes.

Hey im just going to throw my 2 cents in because well thats what I do, maybe instead of removing features from a previous client when you make a new one you should just build on to it, there is nothing worst than getting a client and having it set up just how you like it and BLAM! client change and its a "MUST DOWNLOAD" unless you want problems...dosent really make sence to me in fact I believe the DC community ends up with the short end of the stick on that one, yea people get a new client but the many users who have been on for years with the same client are like "WTF?! I dont want to change! I like my client" and they end up doing 1 of 3 things they 1.) keep there old client and come into problems and end up leaving the community because its buggy 2.) they get the new client and complain because its buggy and end up not using DC++ to its full advantage or 3.) they end up leaving because DC++ becomes too complicated....and you may not think its a big deal...but think about it, if every year the DC++ community lost 100 users each day what would be 36,500 users you loose each year, thats 365 hubs with 1,000 users in each hub lost because users find it too complicated........my suggestion try to just build on to DC++ dont just take some features away hell those features you take away might be the only reason some users even join in the firt place.......... THE VEWS AND OPINIONS ARE NOT EXPRESSED BY THOSE OF DC++ FORUMS. they are just my 2 cents

May sometimes this man with big black hair :D posts a bit much but this time there is something to it. I mean the community loss part. Its a simplification of a more complicated problem though. Of course the Support forum is not the right place for this...

100 * 365 = 36 500.
3650 * 1000 = 3 650 000.

You need to work on your math. And as there is no actual basis for your numbers, you should also do some research. Yes, there may be some users who refuse to upgrade because of removed features, but those features are usually removed for a reason, even if the reason is hard to see for anyone but the core development people. The client is open source, if someone is not happy, they're free to fork their own client with the features they want, as has been done hundreds of time already.

Thanks for the correction didnt notice it, but lets be realistic...........60 - 70% of the DC community are novices and they depend on you guys to help them along the correct path of downloading now I just pulled an random number out of the sky factoring in highs and lows you may have 37 users leave one day and 63 leave another day so it balences out. now as far as I am concerned im fine with my client happy as can be....but take notice you are so cought up on the petty and trying to prove your superiority and how smart you are, well if you ask me if you were really that smart you wouldnt be forcing your opinions onto other people and talking to them as if they are beneath you as you so elegantly do sometimes.....and im pretty sure I said "THE VEWS AND OPINIONS ARE NOT EXPRESSED BY THOSE OF DC++ FORUMS." somewere in there......so in closing I would like to say f*** you very much and have a nice day  :D

You've failed to comprehend the fundamental point behind his post. You initially pulled a completely random number out of the air , and then you continue to keep on doing the same thing. You don't actually take on board or seem to fully understand what has been written.

GOLIATH, Could you please stop your "underdog" talk?. You keep ranting about how we all "trying to prove our superiority and how smart we are".

I am definitely not smart or superior. I'm trying to help people the best I can with the small knowledge of DC++ I have.

I also get the feeling that if you want smart answers from really smart people (I'm not one of them, but some people here are actually very intelligent) you need to find a way to ask intelligent questions.

Right. Not an acceptable style and does not draw the real problem either. But reflects many people's opinion...
I am definitely not smart or superior.
You are sure (I mean you and all the contributors). :!:
The problem is while the project, the code, the support and all the effort is superior sometimes the planning of the development would need to consider the human factor : the everyday users who are the community - what this project created - based of...

see this is the most important thing, Im not trying to be rude or disrespectiful and I apologize if anyone took it that way, I live in the place you might have heard of it before its called the United States of America, its a great place by default, we have this kinda of policy where we are allowed to "voice our opinion" on certin subjects and matters, now as eMTee pointed out Im not the only one who thinks like this believe it or not alot of users feel the same way....does that mean Im going to stop using dc++? hell no I understand there are alot of things you can do to make your experince better on here but see the thing is alot of regular users dont know or understand that.....thats all im saying again sorry if I offended anyone it wasent my intentions

GOLIATH you forgot the 4th point which should have been the 1st point. They update to the new client and either like it more because it has new features and is more stable or they don’t care either way they are just happy they can continue on their way. If people really don’t like the way DC++ is going there are plenty of other clients out there that people can use. Just remember progress must be made and that does mean leaving something’s behind.
