How do I START this thing up?

My roomate had DC++ up and running for me in the dorms at school at Oregon State, but now I moved schools. I'm not the most computer savvy person so I don't know how to get this thing started again because my OSU hub doesn't work. I don't even know what a hub is though. All I want is to download music / movies faster than using Limewire, because I remember at the dorms I could download a whole movie in one or two minutes. Somebody please help me to get this thing started.
