out of order scenes (codec problem)

hey there,
i've been trying to solve this problem i've had with a video. I find the sequence of the video all out of order and cut halfway through. I have asked around and i don't think that other people with this video have this problem so i'm guessing it's something to do with my computer. i'm wondering if this sounds like a codec problem...

someone suggested that i use gspot on it which tells me that the file is a MPEG file. The file extension is AVI. Could this be the problem?
