When I try to watch some of my movies the screen turns green.

I agree with BSOD, ffdshow is great, install that and only install new codecs when you need them. Dont install codec packs, as this is just asking for trouble some codecs dont play nicely with others, so the less you have installed the better.Media Player classic is also really good.
If you're ever unsure about what codec a movie uses, get gspot or avicodec, they will look at the header of the file and let you know what type it is.

I can't recommend this codecless movie player enough http://www.videolan.org/ freeware, opensource and plays most movies regardless of whether you have the codecs installed.
