Very new to this... creating DVDs, viewing mpgs

I don't normally have any problems with viewing AVIs and MPGs but every time I have tried to view one I have downloaded, I have been told that there is a problem... are there any obvious things I should check?

On a separate note, what software is out there to convert the MPGs into 16:9 ratio or better still to burn to DVD
