Filtering search results

It seems to me that searches always look for search terms as proper substrings, as though the words are wrapped in wildcards ( %searchterm% ). But I sometimes want to search for a short word that might be included in a common word.

For instance, if I look for tracks by the swedish band Urga, I will return a lot of hits for files with the word "pURGAtory."

Does there already exist a way to require that a search term match a full word? Or to filter search results with similar criteria?

filtering search results by the client would be nice,

but filtering it with search would be better (less bandwidth consuming)

I fear this would require a protocol extension though

well nothing in the protocol states how strings should be matched.

search for "foo bar" could match "foo" and "bar" or the word followed by eachother "foo bar" or any of the two words "foo" or "bar".

Does the nmdc-client state which is the correct one?

Couldn't find the "correct" way according to the nmdc-help file or their website. (you can backengineer it and use those result or you can choose what you think is right when you write a client)

But Sedulus is right, this should be done with changes in the protocol.
