Why is .401 still up for d/l?????????

Why is .401 still up for d/l?????????

Post by xstatic » 2004-04-15 22:02

There are major flaws and security risks. I cant find hardly any hubs that allow .307 or .401. Least none that are worth going into. Mind updateing the program to eliminate these issues or at least take .401 down and replace it with .306?

Would you care to elaborate. you have my attention.
Major flaws.?
What security risks?

I have yet to be turned away from any hub while using 0.401
Having said that there are a few thousand to choose from.!

Well I only go into hubs that have a limit of atleast 100 gigs so maybe some of the ones you hang out in are lower share hubs. Almost everyone of the hubs I hang in sent a msg out a few days ago saying not to use .401 cause of security issues. Maybe they have been fixed or maybe they retracted the claim. Im not sure. I just dont want to get banned ofr upgradeing if its true. I like to stay update but im not sure now.

A music hub that i hang in bans for the use of .401 still. They state it in the rules. Its a smaller hub but its the only hub that has the music I like so I have no choice with that one. Was there a issue? Is there still? If not was it fixed? I'd like to be able to inform the OP's so they wont bann ppl for it.

No, I don't think so, I tend to use the larger hubs also, sharing 125gb upwards.

So no specific information, then you are merely fueling the fire.

Fair enough its their hub, maybe they have an issue with hashing.?

Is'nt that the Ops job to have the correct info.

There's one crash in 0.401 that's fixed (I made the original oops) in the development version - double clicking in the transfer area, but not on a transfer, will cause a crash. That's the only stability issue I know of in 0.401. I don't know of any security issues.

(I maintain the bug tracker, mostly, so if there's a factual basis to this claim, I have not seen it.)

There's no issue, but there are a vocal number of people who are unhappy with hashing. On the systems of everyone I know (only ~250 total people in the hubs I'm in), hashing doesn't impact the performane of their computer. However, it does for some people.

Hashing has a cost to it (idle processor cycles, and disk I/O), but the benefits are not as visible. Thus some people seem to think that it's a waste. They certainly have a point, and adding more visble benefits from hashing is pretty important and will be the only thing that makes some people accept its utility.

I can only imagine that hashing is why your music hub bans 0.401. If they're banning it for some other reason, just keep the thread alive and we'll see what we can do to make them happy (within reason - no blowjobs).

I would guess that it's this they think of as an security risk even though it don't are as the companys that hunt people on dc can already get the ip of people so this will in no way make it ieasier for them. http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/forum ... php?t=9159

I love deluded elitism. It's just so amusingly and fittingly emblematic of the issues displayed here...

I saw this somewhere else on this forum, and I like it enough to quote it, just for you: "How efficient, arrogance and stupidity in one package."
xstatic wrote:Almost everyone of the hubs I hang in sent a msg out a few days ago saying not to use .401 cause of security issues.

I've never heard hashing, as has been speculated in this thread, described as a security issue really (yeah, there's CyberAL's "OMG now the **AA can use hashes" post here, but that's kind of silly); further, 0.307 has hashing as well, and it sounds like it's not banned. Rather, the IPs showing is usually what I see described as such about 0.401. That characterization, to use HaArD's apt term, is moronic.

I never said anything about hashing. That is not a security issue. The showing of the persons ip is what the issue is. And its not just because of the R I A A. It also is said to make it easier for people to hack you. Altho netstat will do the same thing. I understand this. If someone wants to hack someone they will do what it takes to do it. But my point is. In 307 and 401 there is no point in haveing the ip shown. It serves no real puppose. "o yay, I get to see if 1 person is d/ling from me under 2 different names, wow"

And I'm not trying to flame any fires. What type of specific info do you need?

I wasnt trying to be arrogant in any way. I was just saying maybe the 20 gig share hubs didnt make a deal about it and only the hubs i hang in did. I could care less what others share. 1 gig helps the community. Most of the time those with big shares have no slots anyay so you cant get anything from them ayway. So what was your point anyway? Just felt like makeing yourself look like a idiot? Ya I figured so.

maybe make the ip thing seen by others only if you allow it? kind of like a option. This way no one will have a problem with it.

Congratulations, you just made yourself look like a moron.

Next time, try looking at the other threads about this before jumping on people who are only trying to help.

Oh, your sharp wit does so mortally wound me.

The arrogance derives from your superior manner in announcing that unlike the rest of us plebes, you "only" patronize 100GB+ hubs, and later pointing out that 1GB hubs are good for the "community", though presumably not good enough for you.

The stupidity derives from being dense and unaware enough to assume that those who have devoted enough time to DC++ to frequent this forum and answer questions are all going to frequent sub-100GB-share hubs to the exclusion of all others.

Thus, arrogance and stupidity. I stand by my judgement.

As far as a broader point: that others are for some reason unaware of this, while you know because only you use those 100GB hubs is ... as odd conclusion for one to draw.

My recommendation would be this.

If you are currently visiting a hub run by people who have banned v0.401 because they think the IP column in DC++ is a security risk leave that hub immediately.

DO NOT RETURN TO THAT HUB WITH ANY VERSION OF DC++

The Ops running that hub have so little knowledge of what is, and what is not, a security risk that you are putting yourself at risk just by connecting to their hubs.

I think we should start a blacklist of hubs run by these complete and utter tards for the betterment of the entire DC community.

I am not sure what to say in this case... just this:

No mather what version of DC, DC++, ODc or any other client, if people want (RIAA or others) can see your ip with or without the little ip bar in the trasfer list...

It doesnt mather what kinda P2P program you use the other side can 99% see your ip without even doing anything for it...

As example.. my firewall shows all in and outgoing connections inclouding the ip's and so does my router. So if your really that afraid of being cought sharing by RIAA or something the is a very simple selution: DON'T SHARE ANYTHING ILIGAL....

That is useful information... Why the vague post:

Hey I totaly understand where all the hostility comes from. You dont have a life and are so rapped up in your computer that you think about it all day long. And when your not around it, its all you can do to control yourself. But hey, no need to take it out on me. I was just stateing that I only hang out in 100 gig share hubs, and the lower share hubvs might not care about the ip issue. Nothing bad about people who hang out in lower share hubs. I forsure dont have the highest share out there. Not even close. So I dont try to make it look that way. I could care less what you or anyone else shares. but I guess you do. Otherwise you would of kept your mouth shut and stayed otu of this.

This forum is not for flameing others. Its for helping better the DC++ community. You are not helping matter by flameing people. Maybe you have a complex in RL. Maybe you dont get to speak up in RL. Maybe thats why you do it here. But there is no need for it. So if you are not going to help, Then stay out of the comversation.

Todi wrote:Next time, try looking at the other threads about this before jumping on people who are only trying to help.

I dont have time to read every thread to see if someone posted anything close to what my topic was about. If you do then hey thast great. But I dont sit at my computer all day long wasteing my life.

Todi wrote:Congratulations, you just made yourself look like a moron.

And what your doing is different?

I understand fully that it is very easy to obtain others ip without the use of dc++ .401. I have stated this in a previous post. I am pointing out that many hubs are banning users for the use of 401. If you cant understand that then dont bother posting here. It will just be a waste of your time.

For someone who is not trying to be arrogant, you failed pretty miserably. You start the thread by saying this about DC++ 0.401
xstatic wrote:There are major flaws and security risks.

You then continue with
xstatic wrote:The showing of the persons ip is what the issue is.

And then you finish off with
xstatic wrote:I understand fully that it is very easy to obtain others ip without the use of dc++ .401.

So in conclusion, this whole thread is completely pointless. For someone who doesn't sit by his computer wasting his life i expected something a bit more meaningful, but i guess you didn't have time for that in the small window of attention you had for us..
